In spite of the riot of colors here, all I could think of upon viewing this was crystal or diamond – the way the many facets trap and refract all colors like a prism. The spiral elements are unique and put me in mind of Merlin’s cave where he was entrapped in a crystal prison by Morgan le Fey. The spirals being portals of escape if he can find his way to one – sort of like a person stumbling through a house of mirrors, groping for the exit.
My ongoing theme with all of these is illusion and folowing your suggestion perhaps his only means of escape is through the spirals of his own mind. The faceted diamond reflects and so if you can see the colors you must already be outside of the crystal cave.
Still tracing my ancestry so who knows maybe I’ve inherited wizardy genes. You know what they say “If it looks like a wizard and thinks like a wizard……”. Hold on! Where’s my pointy hat?

Ahhh! Very clever. Since Merlin was also known to be clever, that must have been how he escaped.
